Bunga yang satu ini tidak begitu populer dikalangan penghobi bunga hias, tetapi dikalangan perias wajah atau penyelenggara pernikahan (wedding party) bunga yang satu ini sangat terkenal bahkan boleh dikatakan bunga utama/pokok, terutama adat jawa. Di bulan-bulan yang ramai pernikahan biasanya bunga ini harganya cukup tinggi per bijinya.
Pembudidaya bunga satu ini masih jarang dan bisa dihitung jari, mungkin karena butuh lahan yang luas serta sulitnya perawatan. Sebenarnya bagi yang sudah berpengalaman seperti Pak Abu Hasan asal Kesamben Jombang, bukan hal yang sulit untuk mengembangkan bunga ini. Pak Abu demikian panggilan sehari-harinya, mengatakan sangat mudah perawatannya bahkan tidak ada perlakuan khusus, cukup beri pupuk kandang dengan radius 1/2 meter mengelilingi pohon dan penyiraman yang cukup di musim kemarau serta penyemprotan hama dengan insectisida murahan, katanya sambil tersenyum.

“Tiap pohon rata-rata bisa menghasilkan bunga 700-800 biji” kata Pak Abu. Saat ini Pak Abu mempunyai lebih dari 50 batang pohon bunga Gading dewasa, dimana tiap 2 hari sekali panen. Kalau gitu per 2 hari Pak Abu rata-rata panen 750 x 50 = 37.500 biji bunga gading siap jual. Di hari-hari biasa seperti saat ini rata-rata harga bunga perbiji antara 25 rupiah. Jadi penghasilan Pak Abu rata-rata 900.000 rupiah per 2 hari, dan ini harga terendah, dan biasanya berlangsung selama 2-3 bulan pertahun. Sedang 9 bulan berikutnya adalah hari-hari dan bulan yang sangat menggembirakan karena harga bisa sampai 100-150 rupiah perbunga. Ketika ditanya di bulan yang menguntungkan, berapa penghasilan Pak Abu ? Pak Abu hanya tersenyum.
“Bahkan untuk jenis bunga gading yang dinamakan gading kantil (istilah jawa) bisa sampai 600 perbiji”, kata Pak Abu. Nah kalau rata-rata harganya 100 rupiah perbiji berapa ya… penghasilan Pak Abu perhari ?
Menurut Pak Abu jenis bunga gading yang laku dipasaran yaitu jenis gading kuning, sedang yang warna putih dan merah kurang ada peminatnya. Selain itu pedagang bunga biasanya minta yang asli artinya tidak dari hasil okulasi atau stek tetapi dari semaian biji dan cangkok. Nah disini kejelian dan kepiawaian Pak Abu dalam melihat pasar serta budidaya bunga gading, Semua pohon bunga gading Pak Abu adalah dari satu induk yang kemudian dikembangkan melalui metode cangkok.
